Celebrating our 2025 Graduates

In July 2025, we celebrated 7 incredible Ashinaga UK Scholars who have graduated from their undergraduate university studies in the UK and have completed our Ashinaga Africa Initiative leadership programme.

These young leaders from South Africa, Kenya, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Sierra Leone, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zambia have demonstrated determination as they have worked towards overcoming adversity, achieving academic excellence, and preparing to lead positive change in their communities and beyond.

The event was generously hosted by our partners Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer, a global law firm who have supported Ashinaga for more than 5 years. Over 24 external guests, including partners and donors joined us to celebrate our Scholars’ achievements. Martin Kavanagh, Regional Head of Practice for Projects in Africa and Chair of Africa Business at HSF Kramer, and Professor Saul Tendler, Chair of Ashinaga UK, both gave inspiring words

Ian, graduating with a BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering from the University of Portsmouth, shared his powerful story of transformation. From a young man facing immense challenges, Ian described his journey as being like the flow of water through varied and difficult terrain - resilient, determined, and always moving forward. Merveille, who has earned an LLB in Law from the University of Warwick, talked about her passion for advancing women’s rights and social justice across Africa. Her dedication reminds us that leadership grows from experience, courage, and a desire to make real change.

All seven Graduates presented their projects displayed on posters around the room - plans born from their motivations, aimed at tackling challenges in communities across sub-Saharan Africa. From designing technology to reduce maternal mortality in Sierra Leone and a virtual platform to reduce post-harvest losses in Kenya, these initiatives demonstrate the impact that our Scholars will make and have made across the continent thanks to Ashinaga’s support.

Ashinaga Scholars are supported by many generous donors who believe in their potential to create lasting impact across communities, industries, and society throughout sub-Saharan Africa. By becoming a supporter of Ashinaga UK, you join a growing community of individuals and organisations committed to empowering the next generation of compassionate Young Leaders for Africa.
